WO Mic - FREE microphone


WO Mic can turn your phone to be a microphone for your computer. You need not to pay a cent to buy any gadget. It's even mobile if you choose wireless transport. Millions of people have installed it and are using it daily for talking, recording, voice remote control and many other activities.

The below diagram shows how it works:

WO Mic architecture

There are 3 components of WO Mic:
  1. WO Mic App which runs on phone. It captures your sound through phone microphone and transmits them to computer.
  2. WO Mic Client which runs on computer. It connects to app, receives voice data and forwards them to virtual mic device.
  3. WO Mic Virtual Device. It also runs on computer, though in kernel space. It receives voice data from client program, simulates a real microphone device, and provides audio data to applications like Sound Recorder.

Main features:
  • Wireless microphone without any cost
  • Can be used with any programs on computer just like REAL microphone
  • Very short lag
  • Easy to configure and use
  • Supports auto reconnection when your computer reboots
  • Support multiple connection methods: Wifi, Bluetooth and USB (Note: it only supports Wifi connection on iOS)
  • Audio format: 48000 sampling rate, 16 bits per sample, mono channel

You need to install all 3 components listed above.

User guide

Step 1. Choose transport
Depending on system, different transports may be selected as the communication channel between your phone and computer:
  • USB transport. You need to
    1. Enable USB debugging on Android phone
    2. Install USB driver on computer
  • Bluetooth. Please bond your phone with computer if you haven't done that. Turn on Bluetooth on both phone and computer.
  • Wifi. Turn on Wifi on both phone and computer and connect them to same hotspot.
Step 2. Start server on phone
  1. Launch WO Mic app on phone.
  2. In app Settings, choose the transport you intend. Leave other options as default.
  3. Back to main UI and click Start on to start the server.

Once the state changes to Started or Connrctable, the server is ready to accept connection request from client.

Step 3. Connect from client on computer
Platform Instruction
  1. Launch WO Mic Client
  2. Select Connection -> Connect...
  3. In transport dialog, select same transport as you did on phone in step 2
  4. Specify target app device corresponding to selected transport:
    • Wifi. Enter the IP address shown on app main UI
    • Bluetooth. Select the phone Bluetooth name in the drop down list
    • USB
  5. Click Ok.
Once client shows to be connected, you can choose WO Mic as the microphone device.
  1. Load driver module if you have not done that:
    $ sudo modprobe snd-aloop
  2. Connect from client
    • Conenct by Wifi. You can find the IP address on WO Mic app UI.
      $ sudo ./micclient-ubuntu-x86_64 -t Wifi
    • Connect by Bluetooth.
      $ sudo ./micclient-ubuntu-x86_64 -t Bluetooth xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
      xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx represents phone Bluetooth address. You can query it on your phone: Settings -> About phone -> Status -> Bluetooth address.
  3. Record
    $ arecord -c 1 -r 48000 -f S16_LE -D "hw:CARD=Loopback,DEV=1,SUBDEV=0" foo.wav
